Common hornbeam - Carpinus betulus

Description

Size: Common Hornbeam can reach a height of 20 to 30 metres, with a straight trunk and rounded crown. Foliage: The simple, alternate leaves are oval and toothed. They are a soft green in spring, turning golden yellow in autumn. Flowers: The flowers are unisexual and grouped into separate male and female catkins. The male catkins are yellow and pendulous, while the female catkins are green and erect. Fruits: The fruits, known as hazelnuts, are grouped together in hanging catkins. They are edible, but their flavour is rather bland. The Common Hornbeam is a hardy, adaptable tree that can add a touch of greenery and charm to any garden.

Origin

Common Hornbeam is found throughout much of Europe, from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean. It is also found in Western Asia and North Africa. It is particularly abundant in the forests of Central Europe, where it often forms pure stands or stands mixed with other species, such as oak and beech. In France, the Common Hornbeam is one of the most common tree species. It is also used as an ornamental tree in parks and gardens.
