American sweetgum - Liquidambar styraciflua

Description

A deciduous tree that can reach 30 to 40 metres in height, with a trunk diameter of up to 1 metre. Palmate foliage with 5 to 7 pointed lobes, intense green in summer, taking on spectacular shades of yellow, orange and red in autumn. Bark grey, cracked and deeply grooved. Small, discreet, greenish-yellow flowers grouped in bunches in May-June. Globular, spiky fruits that disintegrate at maturity to release winged seeds. Rapid growth in early years, then slows with age.

Origin

American Copalm is native to the south-eastern United States, Mexico and certain regions of Central America. In its country of origin, it can easily reach 40 metres in height and 12 metres in width, while in Europe it rarely exceeds 30 metres in height. It grows in non-calcareous soil with good exposure to the sun.
