Tulip tree - Liriodendron tulipifera

Description

The tulip tree is a majestic tree native to North America, recognisable by its slender, elegant silhouette. It can reach heights of 30 to 40 metres, with a straight, cylindrical trunk. Its deciduous leaves are oval with smooth edges and a bright green colour. In summer, the tree produces magnificent tulip-shaped flowers, hence its name, which are orange-yellow with orange spots at the base. The resulting fruit are elongated cones containing winged seeds. It is often planted for its ability to absorb large quantities of carbon dioxide.

Origin

The tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) is native to eastern North America, where it grows naturally in the deciduous forests of the Appalachians, from south-eastern Canada to northern Florida. It was also introduced to Europe in the 16th century, where it is widely grown as an ornamental tree.
