European beech - Fagus sylvatica Atropurpurea

Description

Fagus sylvatica 'Atropurpurea', or Purple Beech, is a cultivated variety of the deciduous common beech (Fagus sylvatica), in the Fagaceae family. Tolerant and low-maintenance, it prefers rich, well-drained soil and a sunny to semi-shady position. The foliage is dark purple to reddish; the oval to elliptical leaves are 4 to 10 cm long with a smooth texture and a slightly shiny surface that takes on a bronze hue in autumn. It measures 20 to 30 m with a dense, rounded crown. The bark is smooth and grey, becoming cracked with age. The flowers are small and unremarkable. The fruits are faines, small nuts wrapped in a spiny shell.

Origin

Fagus sylvatica 'Atropurpurea' is a horticultural variety developed in Germany and the Netherlands over previous centuries. It is derived from the common beech (Fagus sylvatica), which is native to Europe, where it grows in the region's temperate forests. It is planted for ornamental purposes in parks, gardens and urban landscapes for its beautiful appearance and foliage colour. It is often used as an isolated specimen or in groups in landscaping and provides excellent shade in summer. Although less commonly used than other tree species, Purple Beech wood can be used in the manufacture of furniture, flooring and other wood products.
