London planetree - Platanus ×hispanica

Description

Platanus ×hispanica, also known as common plane or shade plane, is a very hardy tree. The common plane tree can reach 20 to 35 metres in height. The trunk is generally straight and massive, with characteristic bark that peels off in irregular patches. The leaves are deciduous, measuring between 15 and 25 cm across. They are dark green on top and lighter on the underside. The fruit are achenes that form spiky balls 2 to 3 cm in diameter. It adapts to a wide variety of soils, but prefers deep, moist, well-drained soils. Plane wood is popular for certain indoor uses and as firewood.

Origin

The common plane is native to the temperate regions of Europe and western Asia. Its natural range extends from southern Europe (particularly the Iberian Peninsula) eastwards to Asia Minor and the Middle East. It has been widely introduced to other parts of the world because of its ornamental appeal and its ability to adapt to different types of soil and climate. It is widely planted as an ornamental tree in parks, gardens and large urban areas for its attractive foliage, majestic habit and generous shade. Its wood is used to make furniture, veneer, plywood and firewood. It is known for its tolerance of atmospheric pollution.
