Austrian oak - Quercus cerris

Description

Quercus cerris, also known as Turkey oak or Crete oak, is a deciduous tree in the Fagaceae family. It is a fast-growing, hardy and adaptable tree that can thrive in a variety of conditions and climates. It is a medium to large tree, generally reaching 25 to 35 metres in height, with a straight trunk and wide, rounded crown. It is distinguished by its cracked, scaly, grey to light brown bark. Male and female flowers appear in spring in the form of catkins. The acorns are large and oval, about 2 to 3 cm long and often grouped in bunches, with a cap covering about 1/3 of the fruit. They take two years to ripen.

Origin

Quercus cerris is native to various regions of Europe and Asia Minor, including Turkey, Greece, Italy and the Balkans. It prefers well-drained soils and temperate to warm climates. It often grows in mixed forests with other oak and deciduous species, as well as in parks and urban areas, because of its aesthetic appeal, size and dense foliage. It has also been introduced to other parts of the world for its ornamental characteristics and the quality of its wood, which is used in construction, furniture and other wood products.
