Callery pear - Pyrus calleryana

Description

The Pyrus calleryana, or Callery pear, is a medium to large deciduous tree, generally reaching heights of 15 to 20 metres. It is distinguished by its beautiful white bell-shaped flowers, which appear in spring before the leaves unfurl. The leaves of the Pyrus calleryana are oval, dark green and turn bright red in autumn, providing a colourful display. The fruits of the Callery pear are small and brown, but are not generally eaten by humans because of their grainy texture. This tree is valued for its resistance to disease and its ability to thrive in a variety of environmental conditions.
