Montpellier maple - Acer monspessulanum

Description

Acer monspessulanum, commonly known as the Montpellier maple, is a native species of deciduous tree in the Aceraceae family. It is a hardy, tolerant tree that prefers well-drained soils and Mediterranean climates. It contributes to local biodiversity and provides habitat and food for various species of fauna. It has five-lobed, rounded to oval palmate leaves. The leaves are dark green, turning yellow to reddish in autumn. The bark of this maple is smooth and grey, becoming rougher with age. The flowers are small and yellow-green, grouped in hanging clusters. The fruit are winged samaras arranged in clusters, typical of maples, and they ripen in autumn.

Origin

Acer monspessulanum is native to the Mediterranean basin, particularly in southern European regions such as France, Italy, Spain, Greece and Portugal. It generally grows in a variety of habitats, including hills, rocky slopes, open woods and forest edges. Its common name, Montpellier maple, is derived from the town of Montpellier in southern France, where the species is commonly found. It is often planted for ornamental purposes in gardens, parks and green spaces for its beautiful silhouette, attractive foliage and bright autumn colours. This maple can be used locally as firewood or to make handicrafts.
