Southern catalpa - Catalpa bignonioides

Description

Pruning: Catalpa can reach heights of 10 to 20 metres, with a straight trunk and spreading crown. Foliage: The deciduous leaves are large (up to 30 cm long) and heart-shaped. They have a characteristic soft green colour and are arranged opposite each other on the branches. Flowers: The large, spectacular flowers appear in panicles in late spring or early summer. They are trumpet-shaped and white or yellow with purple or brown markings. Fruit: The long, slender, bean-like fruits remain on the tree throughout the winter. They contain winged seeds that scatter in the wind.

Origin

Catalpa originated in the south-east of the United States, mainly in the states of Mississippi and Georgia. It is also found in Alabama, Florida and Louisiana. It is one of the few trees to have retained the name of its country of origin. It was introduced to Europe in 1726 and has become naturalised in certain regions.
